Tips for ATV Sand Riding
ATVs are designed for off-road use, and can handle all kinds of different environments. However, certain types of terrain can create unique challenges. Sand is one notable example. If you want to ride your ATV in a sandy area, there are a few adjustments you’ll need to make. This guide from the experts at Big Country Powersports has what you need to prepare your ATV.
Equip Your Quad
Start by equipping your ATV with paddle tires. Paddle tires are designed to displace large amounts of loose material, which is why they are perfect for use in sandy environments. If your four-wheeler currently uses aluminum sprockets, swap them out for steel sprockets. Steel sprockets are a lot better at handling sand abrasion than aluminum sprockets.
Another thing to watch out for is your chain jamming up due to sand. Avoid this by using a lightweight, low-viscosity lube on your chain. Finally, outfit your quad with a pre-filter and air box cover to keep sand out of the engine. If you’re riding in an area with dunes, stick an orange safety flag on your ride to make yourself more visible to those who might be riding up the other side of the dune.
Carry Supplies
Sand and heat tend to go hand in hand. You’ll need to take steps to ensure that both you and your ATV don’t overheat. In addition to extra coolant and fuel for your vehicle, pack some water and something to replenish your electrolytes, like a sports drink or salty snack.
Riding Tips
We recommend taking a quick look around before each ride and establishing a riding area for yourself. You won’t have to worry about getting lost as long as you stay within that area. If you’re riding on dunes, consider having another person stand on top of the dune and act as a spotter. They’ll be able to signal you if someone is coming up the dune coming in the opposite direction, which will hopefully help you avoid a collision.
