Cleaning

Regular maintenance starts with cleaning. If you don’t clean your scooter, dirt and mud can build up and cause corrosion problems later. While cleaning, avoid getting water inside the engine components, like the air filter or spark plug. Take a ride after cleaning it, in case you have gotten any water inside on the engine. If you want to, you can also polish and wax your scooter as needed.

Cleaning your air filter, spark plug, and the carburetor is also just as important. If your air filter is dirty, you’ll probably need to clean or change it and clean your carburetor. The quality of your air filter determines how much air your engine gets while it’s running. You can use rubbing alcohol and soapy water or buy a special cleaner for the air filter and carburetor. However, ensure the air filter is completely dry before reinstalling it.

Clean your spark plug with a wire brush if needed. Check the spark plug after every 500-1,000 miles, but you shouldn't need to change it until 1,500 - 4,000. Additionally, you should keep track of your liquids. Your engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and brake fluid are critical to keeping your scooter running strong.

Tire Pressure and Suspension

Knowing your tire pressure is vital for safety. Checking your tire pressure also helps reduce tire wear and improve your fuel economy. Check your owner’s manual for your tire pressure recommendations. In addition, checking and replacing your suspension when needed will give you a much better ride.

Check Brake Pads, Gaskets, and Drive Belt

Brake pads should measure 1.5mm and should be changed at least every 5,000 km. Your exhaust gasket and cylinder head gaskets should be checked regularly. Every 2,000 km, you should change your cylinder head gasket. Consult your owner’s manual to find the proper drive belt width, as it wears down and affects your transmission and speed.

These tips are basic guidelines for any vehicle. Regular maintenance and cleaning will prove to help you keep your scooter on the road. Stop by Big Country Powersports in Bowling Green, KY, today, and we serve customers from Louisville, Kentucky, and Nashville, Tennessee.
