ATV Buying Guide: Part Two
We previously discussed key questions to ask yourself when buying an ATV. Here are four more important questions to consider.
What's My ATV Experience Level?
Riders need to be able to safely stay in control of the four-wheeler's power. Otherwise, it can lead to a stressful riding experience and even an accident!
Novice riders will want to get a quad with a less powerful engine. Usually, that means ATVs in the 250 to 300 ccs range. It's also helpful to consider features such as automatic CVT transmissions, keyed ignitions, and throttle limiters.
More advanced riders can explore higher powered ATVs. I's important to be realistic about your current experience level. You may no longer be a beginner rider, but you also may not be ready for the most powerful quad just yet.
Where Do I Want To Take the ATV?
A typical four-wheeler is designed to travel across compact dirt. Other terrains, such as sand or mud, pose extra challenges. It's wise to buy an ATV that's built with those challenges in mind. Otherwise, you face a much higher chance of getting stuck or running into other performance issues.
It is possible to modify a quad with accessories, such as different tires. If you want to go down that route, be sure to factor those modifications into your ATV budget.
What Type of Transmission Do I Want?
Similar to cars, ATVs can come with a manual or automatic transmission. Both offer unique advantages.
ATVs with automatic transmissions can more easily drive up slopes. After all, operators won't need to spend time trying to downshift. These models are best suited for easy, gentle trail riding.
Four-wheelers with manual transmissions can better handle more challenging trail rides. The manual transmission design reduces wear on the various ATV parts, which helps reduce the need for parts replacements and repairs.
What Features Do I Want?
Quads can come with a wide range of features. Added features will increase the ATV's price, but it will also improve the riding experience.
For example, maybe rider comfort is a priority for you. Look for four-wheelers that come with fenders, which will keep mud and water from hitting you.
It's wise to spend some time researching the various potential ATV features. Once you know what's available, you can decide which features best suit you. You can also chat with a dealer, such as the experts at Big Country Powersports, about your budget and riding style. They will then be able to suggest the features that are most compatible with your needs and wants.
